I love drawing people. I cycle through Dublin most days and capture images of those I pass. Generally when waiting at traffic lights with a little vPro camera mounted to my bicycle. When it is dry I sit and sketch. This is one of a collection of 40 drawings I have done to capture the people of Dublin in across three months in 2019. There are a range of people, some working, some walking, some waiting, some looking and lots on their mobile phones. Each person appeals to me for a unique reason. The way they stand, sit or walk or especially if I happen to see them regularly.
I tried to discipline myself to capture the essence of the person in a single line without really lifting my pen off the page. It was hard not to draw what I believed to be conventional heads, ears and hands etc. I had to draw the shape as I saw it and move onto the next part of the image without correction. Over time this loosened my style and improved accuracy. I also seemed to start with less watercolour wash and as I went on got more exuberant.
