Poolbeg Chimneys
Watercolour and pen
I have wanted to do this piece for a long time, but couldn't decide on the composition.  Then one day I realised that the ladders and platforms on the stacks are fascinating and I visualised what it would be like to be up standing there.
I then wanted to draw the Dublin skyline and Dublin Port into the scene at sunset and it all came together.  The cranes just gave a clear interest to the mid distance and it all came together.  Did you ever know that they are colour coded depending on where they are located?

Dublin Bay
Watercolour and pen
I had to do a portrait of Dublin that included the lighthouses.  I am continuing with my new watercolour technique.  There is an element of uncertainty.  Initially I had to come up with a composition that included a two mile long scene without making it seem too unreal.  The Sky is an experiment in sunset and I think it has turned out well.  The water incorporates the colours of the sea and the light from the sky.  In this one I have included the name Dublin as it really seemed to set off the piece.
Poolbeg Lighthouse.
Watercolour
I couldn't do a painting of the bay and not dive in to paint the lighthouses.  Poolbeg sits proudly at the end of the Bull Wall on the south side of the bay.  I wanted to capture the sunset as one looks back into the city.  The chimneys frame the piece nicely and I really like the hue off the rocks.  They seem to ground the lighthouse nicely into the sea.
North Bank Lighthouse
Watercolour and pen
There is a vibrancy to the green that I really liked in this lighthouse.  When painting it I decided that there would be no blue in the sky to accentuate the green.  A Lovely vibrant sunrise fires up the sky in the background.
Unusually, I also went with a green sea.  I felt this complimented the lighthouse and kept a simplicity to the piece.
North Bull Lighthouse
Watercolour
The last of the lighthouses is the North Bull Lighthouse.  It sits on the north side of the bay at the end of the north wall and Dollymount.  The day I pained this I was down at the sea there and there was a gale blowing and waves splashing around the lighthouse.  Where the sea at the other two lighthouses is realtively calm, I wanted to create a blustery, stormy feel to this piece.
Bathers, Dollymount.
Watercolour
Just beyond the North Bull lighthouse is the Dollymount bathing shelters.  There is a strong culture of all year swimming for folks of all ages.  In this piece I wanted to capture the early morning swimmers catching the sunrise.
O'Connell Bridge Dublin
Watercolour
In this piece I wanted to capture the sights and shapes around O'Connell Bridge.  I originally intended just to paint the view of the O'Connell statue, but it was a bit boring.  When I included the south side and the Lafayette building in the piece it came to life.  I have seen hundreds of sunsets along these quays and there is a wonderful light source in this piece that captures these sunsets for me.
Sunset II, Grattan Bridge.
Watercolour
I  have gone down the quays a bit for this one.  I love the hippocampus light stands on Grattan Bridge.  They have an other worldly feel to them.  Once again I tried something new with the composition in this one.  I really liked the idea of bringing in the tower lantern at the top of the Clarence Hotel.  To achieve that I unusually went for a front on composition to complement the perspective to the left as we look down the quays.
